Exercise #136: Craft
Posted 12/2/05

Have you ever written from the opposite sex’s point-of-view? And if you have, how do you know if you did it successfully?

For this exercise, fool the Gender Genie. This Web site: http://www.bookblog.net/gender/genie.html is one of several out there which guess gender. Submit a text piece, and the Gender Genie will guess the author’s gender.

Write a piece from a specific gender’s POV, submit it to one of these sites, get the Genie’s guess, and then send your piece to The Desk Drawer. At the bottom of your piece, tell us which gender you chose to use and whether you were successful or not.

If you prefer not to send any of your work to the Web site, you may alternatively simply write your piece and send it in to The Desk Drawer. Again, at the bottom of your piece, tell us which gender you chose to use.

When you critique someone else’s SUB for this exercise, be sure and tell them whether you think they’ve successfully written from the chosen POV!
