Exercise #173: Self Knowledge
Posted 8/18/06

This is a three-day exercise. No cheating!

List five things which will be bad about tomorrow, then do the same thing with five good things about tomorrow. Write them down somewhere (notepad, sticky note, email to yourself) and keep them. This would be Friday’s task. (Or whatever day you start on.)

Live through the “tomorrow,” taking mental notes about good and bad things. This would be Saturday’s task.

Here is Sunday’s task: Now write to the exercise. Get out your list from two days back (Friday’s list) and review it. Did the bad things happen the way you thought they would? Were the good things as good or better?

You may post to the list one (no more!) of these things:
 a) Your Bad Things list, with each item noted on whether it actually occurred, was better than you expected, or was worse,
 b) Your Good Things list, with each item noted on whether it actually occurred, was how you expected it to be, was better than you expected, or was worse,
or
 c) What you learned from doing this exercise.

I consider this a self-knowledge exercise because it forces us to see how we view future events, and how often what we imagine is not always what happens.
