Exercise #243: Self Knowledge
Posted 12/21/07

We’ve discussed our email addresses before. They are, in effect, names we chose for ourselves. This time, tell us about your given name.

Do you like it? What does it mean to you? If you could change it (and wanted to) what would you change it to? Why? Have you ever gone by another name? Why?

Go into depth about your name and tell us everything you can think of about it. You may choose to include or exclude your family name.

You may, if you’d rather, write a piece where a character discusses his or her name with another character.

Word limit: 1200
Please use the subject line:
       SUB: Exercise #243/yourname

(Your family name is your last name, in Western culture, and everyone in your family has it. Your given name is your “call” name, your first name in Western culture, and is usually the one given to you at birth by your parents. My given name is Michelle and my family name is Hakala.)

This self-knowledge exercise might give you some insight into the connections you have with your name.
