Exercise #415: Scene
Posted  4/8/11

Today’s exercise comes from Sharon Allen (Sharona).

An elderly couple and their middle-aged son are dining at a festive and busy restaurant for the first time. A loud female voice is heard to say, “Don’t you ever do that again!”

A few minutes later, there is an exchange with the server. She says, “I’m so sorry. It’s completely my fault. I’d like to get you something.”

The server retreats to an alcove, in full view of the restaurant. The son approaches and speaks quietly to her. They both break down and weep. They hug at the end of this brief encounter.

The three customers leave the restaurant. When the server brings food to another table, she is asked about her welfare.  Her response is unexpected.

Write the scene to provide a contrast between the setting and the encounter.  Show how we got here or what happened next.

Critiquers, along with standard grammar and spelling review, note if the story is believable. How well did the author show us a contrast or explain the encounter?

Note the larger word limit.

Word limit: 1500
