Exercise #492: Craft
Posted  11/2/12

For today’s exercise, give us your best novel-writing tip.

The National Novel Writing Month tradition is a grueling journey for me. I will no doubt post more about this (on-list only) when I do my MISC posts for November credit, but I now know that I am absolutely not a novel writer. My comfort zone is short stories, tending toward the very, very short. If I go over a page, it’s long for me.

So for those of us who have trouble writing a novel, I’m asking all you folks who are comfortable with long tales to chip in your thoughts about the dos and don’ts of novel writing.

If you’re like me, you might choose to do this exercise as a short story tips, instead.

Critiquers, along with the usual grammar, spelling, etc, review, consider these questions:

     * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer?
     * Why or why not?
