Exercise #17

Exercise #17: Self Knowledge
Posted 8/22/03

We all have fears and worries every day. Some of us know worrying is useless, but that doesn't stop us from doing it. (Does it?)

For this exercise, keep track for one day of all the fears and worries you have. Write them down, no matter how small or how large they may seem. (I'm afraid that stupid remark at lunch will cost me my job. I'm scared the dentist will pull out the wrong tooth tomorrow. I'm sure I left the stove on when I left for work and the house will burn down.)

The next day, cross off any of the fears or worries which have been resolved. (I still have a job, the dentist appointment was moved to next month, and the house didn't burn down.) Ideally, this exercise should run until all the items on your list have either happened the way you envisioned or are no longer a concern, but for this exercise do as much or as little as you want.

For your SUB, either write up what you felt or learned from this exercise, or pick one of those dire events and fictionalize it for us.
