Exercise #58

Exercise #58: Craft
Posted 6/4/04

Great news! Your last submission to a magazine has been accepted. The catch? They want you to write a short bio of yourself.  It happens all the time. I've had to write two. Sometimes they ask you to write it in first person, sometimes third, sometimes they don't specify. I always find them a very hard thing to do.

This was the teaser description of Nicole Kidman, one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people: "She has the ability, like a glass bullet, to carry fragility and force, to be beautiful and a little unnerving."

We write like that all the time, in every SUB we post... but how much harder is it to apply that same creative skill to ourselves? For this exercise, write that short bio the publisher wants. The word limit on this one has been lowered to 100; your bio should never be more words than your story! It's going to go at the end of your magazine article or on the inside cover of your book, so make it shine.

Since some of us recently posted introductions, you may choose to create a bio for a character. If you do, be sure to tell us what genre your character writes, where they submitted it, and whether it's a first sale.

Word limit: 100
Please use the subject line:
