Exercise #1000: Craft Posted 7/7/23
Let’s play with characterization today. What we say about a character (or allow him to say about himself) affects the reader’s relationship with him. Whether the character is liked, admired, loathed; we have control of that. Everything from where/when the character is to how he speaks to what he does - it all contributes to the inner picture the reader has of him.
Mix and match these to create one character, and then write him (or her) in the two different ways.
Characteristics: * Age: Child, teen-ager, young adult, elder. * Ethnicity: Hispanic, Caucasian, Black, Asian, American Indian (you may add one but let us know what it is). * Gender: Male, female, non-binary. * Location: Urban, suburban, country.
Desired Outcome: * The reader likes the character and wants to read more. * The reader dislikes the character and wouldn’t finish the book.
Critiquers, along with the usual grammar, spelling, etc, review, consider these questions: * Did the author succeed in writing both outcomes? Why or why not? * Was this helpful to you as a writer? Why or why not?
Word limit: 1200 for each section (two) Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #1000/yourname
