Exercise #162: Craft Posted 6/2/06
I remember very few of my dreams, but the ones I remember stand out as being exceptionally odd. During the dream, of course, everything is possible and even the most insane things are plausible and acceptable.
In one of the last ones I had (that I remember), a group of men were doing target practice with paintball guns. What’s so odd about that? They were using ball and powder muskets in the hallway. I remember being extremely upset about the powder marks in my carpet. At the time, I found nothing out of the ordinary about shooting muskets in the hallway.
Part of learning to write is being able to draw the readers in, to make them see and feel the way you want them to. For this exercise, choose your protagonist and then put him/her into a dream. Your readers should see and feel the surrealistic texture of the dream, without finding it so strange it’s unbelievable. The goal is not to fool your readers, but to help them see what the character sees. You may start at any point within the dream you want, but you may not start with your POV character being awake. End your piece with your character awakening.
Be outlandish, but credible.
