Exercise #186: Self Knowledge
Posted 11/17/06

I attended a conference one year where the keynote speaker had placed various oddities upon each table. She called them “wonderments,” and each one was a natural . . . something. Our table had a bit of fur, shed from some species of monkey. It had several hues, ranging from reddish-brown to black to brilliant white. The speaker’s speech told us how we take such little wonderments for granted each and every day.

For this exercise, share with us a wonderment. Find something in your immediate environment which is a miniature marvel. It can be anything at all: the #2 pencil which allows you to write a novel, the mechanical marvel of the automatic pool cleaner, the fascinating ability of flipping a switch and having a room light up, the shed tooth from your seventh-month-old kitten. Describe the wonderment in detail so we can share in the wonder.

I consider this a self-knowledge exercise because what amazes and awes us can tell us much about who we are.
