Exercise #197: Craft Posted 2/2/07
Setting the mood. We all do it, every time we write. We know exactly how we want the reader to feel, and we choose our words accordingly.
Pick one of these activities: Riding a bicycle (or other self-powered item) Riding a horse (or other riding beast) Preparing a meal Cleaning something (dishes, laundry, the counters, the garage, etc) Getting up from sleep Getting ready to sleep Choosing something (a movie, a book, new dishes)
Pick a mood: Disgusted (Ewww) Sexy (Oooolala) Neutral (Ho hum) Hatred (Grrr) Excited (Wow)
Now describe doing your activity. Make the reader feel the mood you’ve chosen. For extra credit, do it twice with the same activity, once with one mood and once with another.
Word limit: 600 per mood Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #197/yourname
Example: My activity is mowing the lawn. For disgusted, I might describe the look of the grease goo around the motor. For sexy, I might talk about how the handle is smooth in my hand. For hatred, I might slam the mower around and run over the roses. Your turn!
