Exercise #325: Self Knowledge
Posted 7/17/09

Today’s exercise comes from Jan Shannon.

Show us a time when a close friend or relative asked too much of you, or if you prefer, show us a time when you asked too much of someone. Did it ruin the relationship? Did anyone get hurt, or learn a valuable lesson?

As always, if you’d rather, you may choose to show a character going through this exercise.

Critiquers, with an exercise like this one, you might choose to answer these questions rather than using a different technique for critiquing the piece:

     * Does this piece elicit an emotion from you? What is it and what do you think was most responsible for it?
     * What is the message, if there is one? Is it presented in a way any reader can understand even if he/she hasn’t had a similar experience?
     * Did the writer’s experience come through to the reader?

Word limit: 1200
Please use the subject line:
             SUB: Exercise #325/yourname

Why this is a self-knowledge exercise: We can often view past events differently now, especially if the event happened a long time ago, or we’ve seen something similar happen to someone we know. This exercise may help you reevaluate one of your own events.
