Exercise #410: Craft Posted 3/4/11
Way back (#336) when I asked what you wanted to see, a few of you wanted more dialog exercises, so here’s another.
Write the following scene as close to “dialog only” as you can. Since there is no setting, descriptions or narrator allowed, the dialog will need to drive the piece. Even in dialog-only, you want to show and not tell. Be careful with your word choices.
The scene is: Two neighbors meet in front of their homes.
Readers should be able to tell: * What the weather is like, maybe even the season, * Whether these two like each other (or not), * If it is a man and a woman, two men, or two women, * What time of day the meeting occurred.
If you feel adventurous, add another item for your critiquers. They should be able to tell . . . what?
Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, note how well you think the author met the requirements of this exercise. Can you tell all four items - and the fifth one, if given - above?
Word limit: 1200 Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #410/yourname
