Exercise #414: Craft Posted 4/1/11
Today’s exercise comes from Richard Kirby.
Richard said, “maybe something about developing conflict -- how to do it and how to keep it going right up to the climax of the story. This sounds vague, but I think it's an all-important topic.”
He’s right. Without the drama of some type of conflict, retaining your reader’s interest becomes more difficult.
I spent some time trying to come up with a “do this” type of exercise around this and could not. So today, think about how you write and give us your tips on creating and keeping conflict going in your stories. How do you do it?
If you need a jump start, how would you do it if you were given this topic....? Write a tale about Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, who are divorcing amicably.
Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, note how well you think the author met the requirements of this exercise. Was the advice helpful? If they used Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, would you have done it the same way? Why or why not?
