Exercise #427: Craft
Posted  7/1/11

Our characters are what pull the reader along with us on the story journey. If the character isn’t likeable or believable, we lose our audience.

Today, create a character and take him on a short trip; to the store, the bank, the post office, anywhere at all. Let us see him go, hear what he says to people he encounters, maybe even sample a bit of what he thinks.

Do not make this into a full story. It is just a short trip, to introduce us to your character. You may use a female character, if you prefer.

Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, answer these questions.
     1. Was the character interesting enough to follow through a whole story? Why or why not?
     2. Did you like this character? Why or why not?
     3. Could you tell anything about the character’s values, motivation, or goals? If so, what are they?
