Exercise #429: Self Knowledge
Posted 7/15/11

We all have a favorite color. Today, show us why your chosen color is your favorite.

If you shrug your shoulders and just say “because,” try this:
   * Set a timer for five minutes.
   * Use this line: I like the color <blank> because . . .
   * Replace <blank> with your favorite color.
   * Freewrite during the five minutes. Don’t worry about what you write, punctuation, or any other self-editing tendencies. Just let the words flow.
   * When the timer goes off, read over what you’ve written, and then see if you can now write to this exercise.

You may, if you wish, show a character tackling this exercise instead.

Critiquers, you might choose to answer these questions for critiquing the piece:

     * Did you catch any spelling errors or other standard proofreading items? If so, note them for the author.
     * Does this SUB make you consider changing your favorite color? Why or why not?

Word limit: 1200
Please use the subject line:
             SUB: Exercise #429/yourname

Why this is a self-knowledge exercise: Most of us have never considered why we like one color over another; we just do. This exercise might help you discover something about the color you hadn’t consciously realized before.
