Exercise #454: Craft Posted 2/3/12
Today’s exercise comes from Bette Stafford, way back when I asked for Craft ideas with Exercise #336.
Bette said, One question I have considered asking John Irving is: "How do you make your characters so emotionally vulnerable, without them coming off as idiots?"
It helps readers identify with your character if the character has a flaw (or several). Even the superheroes have some vulnerability (though it may not be emotional). How do you, as the author, give your protagonist character imperfections without damaging their heroic aspects? How do you make your villain someone the reader can relate to?
You may, if you wish, show us a scene that illustrates a heroic protagonist with flaws or a semi-likable villain.
Critiquers, along with the usual grammar, spelling, etc, review, consider these questions: * Was this helpful to you as a writer? * Why or why not?
Word limit: 600 for essay, 1200 for illustration Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #454/yourname
