Exercise #488

Exercise #488: Craft
Posted  10/5/12

Tyger submitted the following idea for a Craft exercise. Thanks, Tyger!

I suggest writing an escalation.

A says something to B, B answers back, A says something else and B blows up. However... Usually, stuff escalates more slowly, gradually (unless there is lots of alcohol involved). I thought it might be helpful to a writer to really work through the escalation process from peaceful conversation to full-blown confrontation.

Too often, writers don't work with that tension. They either let us know from the beginning that A or B is scowling or they go 1 2 3 blow! and it feels unnatural.

So there you have it. Show us an escalation. If you can’t think of a situation for your escalation, email me privately and I’ll give you one.

Critiquers, along with the usual grammar, spelling, etc, review, consider these questions:
     * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer? Why or why not?
     * Was the escalation believable? Why or why not?

Please note the larger word limit.

Word limit: 1500
Please use the subject line
