Exercise #504: Debate Posted 1/25/13
Time for a debate!
My day job has come up with a new way to make it easier to count our walking steps. See, if we make progress toward health goals each year, we get a discount on our medical coverage for the next year. Walking today means lower rates in 2014.
The old way of counting was wearing a crappy pedometer that didn’t work very well. And, like people everywhere, we found ways to cheat. (Seriously? Cheating at step counting?)
So now, you can get and wear a little thing that looks like a shiny black stone brooch. This thing will electronically track your steps all over the campus. (I am not sure if it tracks anywhere else.)
One person stopped me on the walking path. “Did you get one of these yet? They’re so simple!” And she pulled up her pant leg to show me a shiny black brooch attached to her shoe at the ankle.
Hmmm. All I could see was the ankle bracelet prisoners on house arrest wear.
Today’s exercise: Show us whether you think this is a good idea or a bad one, in such a way that we agree with your point of view.
Critiquers, you might choose to answer these questions for critiquing the piece: * Did you catch any spelling errors or other standard proofreading items? If so, note them for the author. * Do you agree with the author’s argument? Is so, what swayed you? If not, why not?
