Exercise #543

Exercise #543: Craft
Posted  11/1/13

Time for the next step in our journey, where we talk about the five Cs that can help you self-check your story for marketability. Every story - to be a complete tale - needs the five Cs.

The second C is Climate(s).

While this is generally thought of as “weather,” for our five Cs we take a more global (no pun intended) approach. Climate can be weather, but it can also be setting. Where is your character? What can he, she or it see, smell, hear or feel? Are other characters present?

For this exercise, place the character(s) you created for Exercise #539 in a setting. Give him, her or it a “climate.” Show us a descriptive scene where we learn where your protag or the villain (or both!) is and add to the reason we want to follow her/him/them/it along on this journey.

Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, you might answer these questions:
     * Was the climate shown interesting enough to keep you reading? Why or why not?
     * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer? Why or why not?
