Exercise #554: Self Knowledge Posted 1/17/14
My co-worker’s sister was killed in an automobile accident last week. Some of the team don’t want to talk to her because they don’t know what to say. I have two things to say to someone in this situation, which don’t help the pain at all but at least allow me to talk to the person.
The first is, of course, is there anything I can do to help? Sometimes the person will ask for something small (like picking up the dry cleaning), sometimes something larger, but most often the person won’t want anything at all.
The second is, when you’re ready, I’d like to hear a story about x. Replace x with the loved one who is gone, in this case “your sister.” Usually the person agrees and I never get that story. But sometimes I get a good one.
For this exercise, share with us the story you would like someone to tell me if you were gone.
You may show a character tackling this exercise instead.
Critiquers, you might choose to answer these questions for critiquing the piece: * Did you catch any spelling errors or other standard proofreading items? If so, note them for the author. * Do you think this would be a good story to tell? Why or why not?
Please note the larger word limit.
Word limit: 1500 Please use the subject line: SUB: Exercise #554/yourname
Why this is a self-knowledge exercise: How you want others to see you may tell you a lot about yourself.
