Exercise #575: Self Knowledge Posted 6/20/14
Think about the people you know (who are living, please) . . . friends, family, even friends of friends. Who haven’t you talked to recently?
Call him or her up and chat for a bit.
Show us how it was to catch up, to talk to the person you chose. How did it feel, what memories did it stir up, will it be as long before you talk to them next time?
Or, if you didn’t connect with him or her, show how that was for you. Were you disappointed that no one answered the phone, did you leave a message, are you hoping for a return call?
Or, if you didn’t call, show us why. What happened the last time you were together that makes calling so hard?
You may show a character tackling this exercise instead.
Critiquers, you might choose to answer these questions for critiquing the piece: * Did you catch any spelling errors or other standard proofreading items? If so, note them for the author. * Could you relate to this? If so, how?
Word limit: 1200 Please use the subject line: SUB: Exercise #575/yourname
Why this is a self-knowledge exercise: Thinking about our connections - and talking to them - strengthens our ties to people, community, the earth and life. Relationships are healthy and necessary but they need nurturing. Those connections and the feelings they generate - good and bad - feed our writing, too.
