Exercise #602: Craft Posted 1/2/15
Let’s do another Craft journey. This one is inspired by an exercise idea from Krys (used with permission).
This journey will focus on building a character. We will not use this character in a story for these exercises, but pieces of such a story can be told to meet the specific exercise guidelines.
There will be four parts: * The Person, January * The Lifestyle, February * The Environment, March * The Completed Character Sketch, April
Please read the exercise guidelines carefully, in order to get the most out of these sections. For the four parts, you may choose to use any “character” you wish, though the exercises will always use “person” and “he” for ease of writing them. I might use a dragon, and wasn’t it Hemingway that made weather a main character?
The Person.
For this exercise, show us your character. His appearance, his attitudes, his emotions, what motivates his life or his dreams. Try not to stray into any other aspects of your character. We don’t yet want to know what he does for a living, who his relatives are, where he lives, or anything else about him. Just the external and internal “things” that make him . . . him.
If you use a story scene to illustrate, please do not introduce any other human characters. (No dialog!)
Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, you might answer these questions: * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer? * Why or why not?
Word limit: 750 Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #602/yourname
