Exercise #750: Brainstorm Posted 3/9/18
As a writer, do you ever find yourself mesmerized by something . . . odd? I do. The folks around me don’t get it but there was one magical moment at a writers’ conference when I stopped to watch water dripping from a roof to a puddle of water. I stood, gazing at the physics and the ripples and my hearing shrunk to just the noise of the splash. I stood so for a bit, not long, but longer than “most” people would. When I came out of my trance, I found three others standing there doing the same thing!
Today, find your writer trance. Examine normal things in a different way, or notice something and really study everything about it.
Can’t find your own? Try a variation of mine: find a puddle and splash in it like you did as a child. No puddles around? Make your own in the shower.
Still stuck? Email me privately and I’ll send you a few things to try.
Done? Now write up what you learned. Give us an essay on why you think the writer trance is a good thing for us authors. Or show us the scene where you explored your own.
Critiquers, along with a technical critique, you might answer these questions: * Was the notion of a writer trance present in the SUB? Why or why not? * Could you relate to the piece? Why or why not?
Word limit: 1200 Please use the subject line: SUB: Exercise #750/yourname
