Exercise #754: Craft Posted 4/6/18
Today's exercise comes from Shirley. She said that a recent real-life writing group exercise had to be entirely dialog. (We’ve had something like this before but it’s been a while.)
So today, pick one of the below scenarios, fill in the blank and show us the ending, using only dialog. No dialog tags are allowed! Try to include at least three speaking roles. You may change the point of view and/or the sex of your characters (for instance, in the first item, it might be your son that announces it).
1. Your daughter announces at Thanksgiving dinner that she’s having surgery for <blank>. 2. Your boss calls you into his office for <blank>. 3. At a retirement party, one of the presents is a <blank>. 4. In line at the supermarket, the woman in front of you slips a <blank> into your cart. 5. The neighbor’s child brings an inflatable <blank> to the local pool.
Critiquers, along with a technical review you might answer these questions: * Was this exercise helpful to you as a writer? * Why or why not?
Word limit: 1200 Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #754/yourname
Note: There are quite a few exercises about dialogue; search for it on the Craft page to see them all. http://www.winebird.com/html/craft.html
