Exercise #770: Craft Posted 8/3/18
When I asked for Craft exercise ideas recently, Bette asked us to revisit transitions. So here we are!
This is one of the places where visual medium (television, movies) lends itself better to the topic. Visual cues seem to be much easier to follow than written ones. Something I watched recently had a slight different “cast” to the lighting in the back story so recognizing the transitions were really easy. We can’t really do that in a story.
Authors rely on written cues. I think the most common one for flashbacks is the change in tense. But what do we use for a story that moves around in current time?
For this exercise, demonstrate transitions for us. Please paraphrase what's happening in your first scene, show us the transition, then paraphrase what's happening in the next scene. You may do this twice (paraphrase, transition, paraphrase, transition, paraphrase). Word counts for the paraphrase are not included in your limits; please keep them brief.
You may add a summary to your SUB. Explain why you think the transitions in your SUB are good ones, share some tips on transitions, or tell us how hard it was to write this one!
Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, you might answer these questions: * Was the SUB helpful to you as an author? Why or why not? * Could you easily follow the transition(s)? Why or why not?
Word limit: 600 for each transition, 500 for the summary Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #770/yourname
