Exercise #793: Craft Posted 2/1/19
Take two items: point of view and viewpoint and mix them up. POV is how the story is narrated while viewpoint is who we follow (and sometimes who is narrating). A story can come out very differently if you follow the antagonist instead of the protagonist.
Need a refresher on POV? Try this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrative_mode
For this exercise, using your scribble pad, write a scene involving at least two characters four times: 1. One POV (I don’t care which one), with a protagonist viewpoint. 2. A different POV, with a protagonist viewpoint. 3. The first POV again, with an antagonist viewpoint. 4. The second POV again, with an antagonist viewpoint.
Which is your favorite? Flesh it out for us and submit this as your SUB. No ideas? Contact me privately and I’ll give you a couple of scenes. Can’t decide? Split the word limit between your scenes and submit them all!
Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, you might answer these questions: * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer? * Why or why not?
Please note the larger word limit.
Word limit: 1600 Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #793/yourname.
