Exercise #803: Self Knowledge Posted 4/19/19
How do you handle quiet time?
I attended The Watch at my church this morning - from 8:00pm on Maundy Thursday to 8:00am on Good Friday, anyone who wants to do so can sign up to “watch” in the Garden for an hour. I do mine in the 3:00am to 5:00am range, since our household tends to be up early and those are usually harder spots to fill on the sign up sheet. This morning’s was 3:00am.
I generally love quiet but I don’t do as well with sitting and doing nothing. An hour seems like a really long time but . . . I digress! I’m not supposed to write to the exercise here, just give you one!
For today’s exercise, think about how you handle times when you are required to be quiet and still. It can be a time like mine today, for The Watch, or a time when it’s expected like waiting at the doctor’s office, or a time when you didn’t expect it but it happened anyway.
How did you do? Give us an essay about the experience or show us a scene demonstrating it.
As always, you can choose to have a character do this exercise instead.
Critiquers, you might try answering these questions for critiquing the piece: * Did you catch any spelling errors or other standard proofreading items? If so, note them for the author. * Could you relate to this piece? Why or why not?

Why this is a self-knowledge exercise: What we think about when there’s nothing else to do can lead to some insights. If you doubt, make yourself sit still without a book or your phone for an hour . . .
