Exercise #809: Craft Posted 6/7/19
Today's exercise is inspired by Steven's recent MISC post recommending a “No Dialog” past exercise. Thanks, Steven!
For today’s exercise, write a scene which contains two characters. One character is only dialog - no internal thoughts, no description of this character except in whatever they say. You can use the narrator’s perceptions of any actions. The other character is no dialog - for this one you are allowed to use internal thoughts or descriptions, as well as also having the narrator’s perceptions of any action.
Too easy? Consider doing instead one with three characters - the first two are the same as above, except remove the narrator. The third character is your narrator and the entire scene must be written from this character’s point of view.
For those of you who are over achievers, you can do both. Please use the same first scene, with just an added character, not a whole new set up.
To post, you may share one or both pieces (if you did both) with us.
Critiquers, along with the usual technical critique, you might answer these questions: * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer? * Why or why not?
Please note the larger word limit.
Word limit: If one scene, 1500; if two scenes, 1000 each is allowed Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #809/yourname
