Exercise #813

Exercise #813: Craft
Posted  7/5/19

Opening hooks are the first chance you have to snag a reader. It may be the only chance you have. Your first paragraph is often the only thing a perusing reader will see. Your words should grab that audience and hold them firmly in your grasp!

A few of my favorite recent opening hooks from this group:

     Everything smelled kind of soapy.
          -- from Steven's Exercise #809

I woke with a headache like a crater behind my eyes, again.
          -- from Randy’s Exercise #811

Today is the day I worried about yesterday . . .
          -- from Sue’s Exercise #811

For this exercise, give us an opening hook or three.  Make us want more!

Critiquers, along with a technical review, you might note whether each hook would encourage you to read on, and why or why not.

Word limit: 100 per hook, 3 hooks maximum
