Exercise #815: Self Knowledge Posted 7/19/19
Have you ever read a self-help book? A vendor came to our business this week and noticed my book on the table (I’d been reading to pass the wait-time, something in the fantasy genre). “Oh, you’re a reader,” she noted. “I love to read, too.” I asked her what she liked to read and she replied, “I read a lot of self-help books.”
I’d never thought of those as a genre to be preferred, somehow.
For today’s exercise, think of the last self-help book you read. (Haven’t read any? Try Exercise #38 and #39 instead.) Give some time to thinking about why you chose it and what you got out of it. Did the book help? Are you still following the course laid out by it in today’s journey?
For your SUB, give us an essay about self-help books or show use a scene involving a character and a self-help book.
As always, you can choose to have a character do this exercise instead.
Critiquers, you might try answering these questions for critiquing the piece: * Did you catch any spelling errors or other standard proofreading items? If so, note them for the author. * Could you relate to this piece? Why or why not?
Word limit: 1200 Please use the subject line: SUB: Exercise #815/yourname
Why this is a self-knowledge exercise: Last week’s exercise may have shown you a place you needed to improve, so this week’s exercise might lead you to a way of such improvement.
