Exercise #945: Craft Posted 6/3/22
To continue the theme from last month's Craft exercise, what do you do about boring stuff? That exercise dealt with "boring" transitions within your work, so today let's look at "boring" parts of your writing life. This is subjective and will vary from author to author.
For today's exercise, write your SUB (instructions below) and then you may add a second section (instructions also below).
The SUB: Find the most boring topic you can, and force yourself to write a scene about it. This does not need to be a complete story but should be long enough for you to learn something about yourself in the process. Can't find a topic? Email me privately and I'll send you some options that I find boring.
Write your SUB first!
The second section: Think about these questions as you add an essay-type note to your SUB. Which pieces of writing do you tend to put off? Do you write the exciting beginning and ending of your story and then let the manuscript sit for months? Do you love detailing everything about a scene but wait to do the action parts? Do you procrastinate about sitting down to write at all? How do you overcome this? What would your tips be about it for an aspiring author? When you wrote your piece for this exercise, what did you learn about yourself?
Critiquers, along with the usual grammar, spelling, etc, review, consider these questions: * Could you relate to this piece? Why or why not? * Was this piece helpful to you as a writer? Why or why not?
Word limit: 1200 for the story, 500 for the second section Please use the subject line SUB: Exercise #945/yourname
