Exercise #271

Exercise #271: Craft
Posted 7/4/08

How do you write? Some authors plot the whole story while others “see” events unfold and simply think of themselves as historians. What’s your style?

Today’s exercise comes in two parts. I ask that you follow the instructions in the first part, and only then look at the second part. Do not peek at the second part before doing any writing, and do not CRIT another member’s #271 until you've done both parts for yourself (unless, of course, you don’t intend to do this exercise).

For part 1, consider the following sentence, and then write a SUB of not more than 500 words. Pay attention to the mechanics of how your mind works as you write. You may continue from this line, use it as an ending line, or go off on a tangent (you may change the gender):

He’d thought the place elegant, until he was within it and saw the cobwebs and dust.

Critiquers, you will find suggestions for your CRIT in part 2.

See part 2 (after you’ve written to part 1) for submission guidelines.
